Church of Saint George

Saint George Vourvoulitis church at Kato Astraki
(3 votes)

At the highest point of the deserted village Kato Astraki we still see the imposing temple of Saint George Vourvoulitis, which unfortunately is now dilapidated. The temple was built on the site of an early Christian Basilica. Next to the church, at the point where we see currently the pipes for the irrigation of the surrounding fields, there was the spring of "holy water of Saint George".

The legend tells that the church was very rich with a golden bell and precious sacred vessels. They say that it was so rich, that the monastery of Saint George Apanosifis was built at the expense of the temple. All this treasure, according to tradition, was buried somewhere nearby to protect it from the Turkish raids.
