Saint John monastery at Gramvousa
(4 votes)

At one of the most remote spots of Crete, the peninsula of Gramvousa, operated the small monastery of Saint John the Baptist (Agios Ioannis), which was dedicated to the decapitation of John the Baptist, celebrating on August 29. We still discern the domed monk cells or auxilliary rooms of the monastery.

It is impressive that in such a secluded and inhospitable place lived monks, but the main reason is the existence of a spring with fresh water nearby. Outside the church is planted a small plane tree that is watered with spring water.
