Agios Charalambos Monastery at Fragokastelo
(4 votes)

Between the beach of Fragokastelo and Orthi Ammos beach we meet the abandoned small monastery of Agios Haralambos, with a great history. It is said that there settled in 1821 the monks Gregorios and Magdalene, although it is believed that the monastery is much older. The settlement of the two monks was the beginning of a flourishing course, as since it was expanded, fortified with a wall, the temple was rebuilt and the monastery acquired property. After the battle of Fragokastelo between the Turks and the locals, in 1828, the nun Magdalene found the lifeless body and the head of the Greek chieftain. Hadjimichalis Dalianis, and buried them at the monastery.

Today we see the two-aisled temple that is dedicated to Saint Charalambos and Saint John the Theologian (Apostle John). There are also architectural parts from the nearby early Christian basilica of Astratigos embedded on the walls of the temple and mainly on the facade, but also the two-story cells of the monks.
