The ruined monastery of Panagia at

Karydaki

Panagia Karydakiani monastery

In the periphery of the village Kato Archanes and near Sylamos, we meet the ruins of Panagia nunnery at position Karydaki. It was a two-aisled church with a transverse narthex. From a spring next to this monastery, the famous Morosini fountain in Candia (current Heraklion’s Lions Square) was watered after running through the giant Venetian aqueduct of Morozini.

Reaching the temple easy, but you have either to cross the nearby aqueduct of Karydaki or walk in a lush green trail in the gorge Sylamiano. In the river just below the monastery, a nice waterfall is formed, reaching a height of 3m.
