Panagia church at Archontiko

The cemeterial temple of the village Archontiko or Alitzani at province Monofatsi is dedicated to the Dormition of Virgin Mary. While the exterior does not look interesting, the interior impresses the visitor with the Byzantine frescoes in relatively good condition. According to an inscription, the frescoes date back from 1352, during the reign of Emperor John V Palaiologos (1341-1391), and were painted by Theodosios Galinos.

The church follows the established iconographic plan of single-aisled temples, which also includes scenes from the Mariological cycle. The frescoes are difficult to distinguish, while the equestrian saints Demetrius, Theodore and George stand out, as well as the innocent daughters of the Jews from the Presentation of Mary.
