Koules of Episkopi

Kazarma

Kazarma fort at Episkopi
(2 votes)

Above Episkopi, province Ierapetra, we meet one Ottoman Tower (Koule), one of the many built in 1868 by the ottoman Avni Pasha in order to control the revolutions of the Greeks, especially after the Great Revolution of 1866. The defensive tower was built there to control the passage of the isthmus of Ierapetra. Today a large part of the fort survives, in a rather bad condition, due to vegetation.

The Koules of Episkopi, called Kazarma, was the central tower of the province (kisla) and the largest one (15x4m) and communicated with the rest towers of the Isthmus of Ierapetra. The koule was equipped with an underground tunnel leading out of it. Its main purpose was to organize the military missions in case of alarm.
