Fraro Monastery near Neapolis

Monastery of Fraro or St. Anthony' in Simeti is located 1km west of Neapolis. It is a ruined Franciscan convent dedicated to San Antonio. The name comes from the Latin word Frari, as the meaning Franciscan friars were called.

The monastery has a typical Roman architecture and is currently ruined. Close to the temple, at position Vigli, you will see a modern sculpture, where the Mother's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of May.

History in short

  • Early 14th century: The Franciscans found the monastery
  • 1330: Here starts his religious career Peter Filargos, who is elected as Pope (in 1409) with the name Alexander 5th.
