Windsurfing in Crete

windsurfingWindsurfing and kite surfing are popular in Crete and the number of water-sport fans is increasing. The most popular beaches in Crete for surfing are mainly situated in East Crete, but there are more places for windsurfers to try.

, near Palekastro, is for sure the most popular beach for windsurfing in Crete and one of the most visited in Greece. Here you will find everything your windsurfer’s heart could possibly desire – especially if you have been infected with the surfer virus for some time. East Crete area stands for strong winds. The meltemi blasts in from the north between the hills, with forces of 7 – 8 no rare occasion in summer. Kouremenos has the position, where the meltemi is at its most reliable and strongest. There are some board renting services near the beach. Apart from the windsurfing kingdom of Kouremenos, and , both in Chania, are loved by surfers. The biggest windsurfing club of Crete lies in Heraklion, in (demolished in January 2011!). There is also another club in , close to Agios Nikolaos, that is ideal for beginners. Concluding, the experienced serfers have lately discovered the rocky shores of (known as Faneromeni), near Sitia, and say that the area is better than Kouremenos, but extreme attention must be paid when entering and exiting the sea.
