Crete hosts several Research Organizations and University Departments that are ranked among the best European educational and research centers.
The University of Crete (UOC) is shared between Heraklion and Rethymnon, the Technical University of Crete (TUC) is housed in Chania and the departments of the Technological University of Crete (TEI) is housed in Agios Nikolaos, Sitia, Heraklion and Chania.
The research institutes of Crete include the Foundation for Research & Technology - Hellas (FORTH) in Heraklion and Rethymnon, the Technology and Research Park in Heraklion (STEPC), the Mediterranean Agrarian Institute in Chania, the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) in Heraklion and the European Network and information Security Agency (ENISA) in Heraklion.
