Kazarma Fortress

Castle Kazarma (Casa di Arma) is built on a hill near the port of Sitia, reminding of the old times that it protected the town. The fort is the only surviving part of the old town walls, which were destroyed by the Venetians.

The fortress and the walls, which served as barracks or command post, is not Venetian, but was built during the Byzantine period. The Venetians later demolished the walls in order to rebuild stronger ones, but it never happened. During the Ottoman Occupation the walls were not rebuilt, but only Kazarma was restored.

Today Kazarma is used for the cultural events Kornaria. The fort has two floors, with internal stairs leading to the floors and the battlements.
