Papadiokambos beach (Faneromeni)

Papadiokambos, Sitia, CretePapadiokambos is located 12km west of Sitia and 59km east of Agios Nikolaos, west of Cape Trahilos and near the Monastery of Faneromeni (in Platani area). It can be accessed via a good dirt road.

In Papadiokambos you’ll meet a long beach with large stones and rocks. In some places a few bays with pebbles are formed, where you can swim. The only sure thing is that you’ll be alone, since the place is completely secluded. There is almost no infrastructure around, so be sure you have supplies with you. Papadiokambos’ strong winds and big waves keep most visitors away. This, however, even in winter attracts the lovers of windsurfing. Papadiokambos (known by windsurfers as Faneromeni) is one of the best spots for wave sailing in Greece. Wave sailing is one of the most striking aspects of the sport. The area has strong currents, large waves 3-4m high and has actually no beach. Some places are very dangerous and you should be very careful and in advanced level, so as not to break your equipment on the rocks.

If you head west of Papadiokambos settlement, especially when on windless days (very rare!), it is worth leaving your car off the road, cross the wire fence and walk 2 minutes to the exit of the gorge starting close to Liopetro area and ending at the beautiful beach of Halkomatas. You’ll get impressed by the amazing formations of the gorge, shaped by laminated sheets of limestone.

Because the sea in the area of Papadiokambos is often wavy, there is an excellent alternative for swimming east of the settlement, on the east side of the peninsula Trahili. The short cape blocks the waves and the waters are almost always calm and azure blue. However, at a first glance you will think that there is no beach, just rocky shores. Yet there is a small humble beach accessed via dirt road (see map) called Gaidaros (i.e. Donkey)! Gaidaros is the only natural beach in the vast area between Kalavros and Sitia town where the sea is calm almost everywhen!
