Kalami beaches (Goudouras)

Kalami is located 70km south east of Agios Nikolaos and 34km east of Ierapetra, very close to Goudouras. The area is full with small coves with small quiet beaches, too far from busy centres. They are very easily accessible, because the road passes just next to them.

The first beach you meet is called Kalami and is named after the reeds (kalami in greek) that are next to it. It is a nice pebbly beach, perfect for seclusion with a spring with fresh water on the beach! There are no tall trees on the beach, but there is a big cave offering natural shade to its visitors, all day round. In order to locate that, you should note that the beach is located directly below the chapel of Agii Saranda. The beach is surrounded by high rocks, thus accessing it from the road is quite tough, but still possible.

There are some tiny coves next to it. The first beach on the west is a tiny beach shaped at the exit of a narrow and small canyon with cavernous walls. Atherina, as it is called, is one of the nicest private beaches in the area. Just 100m on the east, there is another small bay facing to the west.

If you head 500m towards Goudouras, you'll meet, among others, the outstanding remote sandy beach with pebbles in parts, called Thodoris' Harbor, probably after a previous owner of the area named Thodoris (Teo). It consists of two adjacent coves, one being ideal for nudism. Note that there are no facilities and natural shade on the beach. Thus, don't forget to get your umbrella and water with you. It is worth a visit due to the amazingly vivid sea colors that have greenish and pinkish hues.

You can drive here from Ierapetra by getting the main road heading east to Sitia, along the south coastline of Crete. After Makrigialos, get the road to Goudouras. The beaches are located next to the road, 1.5-2 km after Moni Kapsa. Alternatively, you can get the bus to Goudouras, but note that the services are not frequent.
