Latomia beach
Latomia is located 82km southeast of Heraklion and 3km east of Arvi. The area is full of greenhouses and outdoor crops, mainly managed by the residents of Arvi.
Here is a small dorp, Latomia, and a great quiet beach, which stretches from Faflagos to Arvi, having a length of 3-4km. The beach is secluded and totally unorganized, despite the fact that access by Arvi is not particularly difficult. The beach is mainly sandy with gray coarse sand and with many rocky parts. It’s a good choice for snorkeling and staying remote. On the west end of Latomia dorp, close to Arvi, there is the large greenhouses’ area called Xerokampos and the homonym settlement (don’t confuse it with Xerokampos of Zakros). The beach of Latomia runs in front of Xerokampos.
Latomia beach can be accessed either by walking eastwards, along the beach, from Arvi, or driving in the passable dirt road that starts from Arvi and passes through the dorps of Xerokampos and Latomia.
The area is full with wonderful marble rock formations, which were previously commercially exploited. Indeed, the name Latomia means Quarries in Greek, coming after the local quarries for stone extraction.
