Kato Gouves (or simply Gouves) is a popular holiday resort located 18km east of Heraklion, in the foothills of Mount Ederi. In the past, the valley of Kato Gouves was cultivated by the residents of the village Ano Gouves with vegetables, olives and cereals.

In contrary to the neighboring crowded Malia and Hersonissos, Gouves offer more peaceful holidays. Here you will find mostly families that enjoy the beautiful sandy beaches, close to all necessary facilities. The beach of Gouves is very well organized with umbrellas, sunbeds, lifeguard, diving centers, water sports, showers, changing rooms, etc. They have fine sand and shallow waters, but are open to the north winds. That's why you will find several small ports and marinas nearby, where you can swim. The coastal road of Gouves runs along the coast, making the detection of your favorite beach easy! In the evening you can walk along this road and enjoy the sunset. There are also many cafes and restaurant on the road with spectacular sea view. Apart from these, on the main road of Gouves, you will find several super markets, shops, pharmacy, practice and ATMs.

Recently we learned that some hotels have closed the access to the beaches in front of them. You should always remember that all beaches in Greece are open to everybody. Thus, you should never accept your removal from any beach.

A place worth visiting is the church of St. Constantine, which is built within a small pine forest, just next to the sea. It is very scenic and this is why hundreds of couples from Heraklion to choose to get married here every year. If it Saturday, it is almost certain that you will come across a Greek marriage. Moreover, 2km north of the shore there is the village of Ano Gouves with its traditional streets, churches and coffee shops. Further north, you can visit the Cave of Agia Paraskevi, located near the village of Skotino. Finally, on the east, rises the steep mountain of Ederi. From far, you can see the two radars used by the Americans, for the operation of the former US air base is Gournes. Today the area has been abandoned and sealed. You can drive over there through a narrow paved road and enjoy a magnificent view to all surrounding areas.
