Sarakiniko beach (Gavdos)
The beach Sarakiniko of Gavdos is located just 1.5km north of the port of Gavdos, Karave. You can get there either by bus from Karave, or by walking 30 minutes from there. It is named after the Saracen pirates who once used the island as a base of attacks.
Sarakiniko, like all beaches in Gavdos is one of the best beaches in Greece that any description can not fit the beauty. It is located on a large cove bay looking north.
It is a dreamy blond beach with crystal clear shallow waters, hidden in a wild landscape of dunes and junipers. The beach provides some very basic amenities and there are some rooms, rental cars, taverns, a mini market and is loved by hundreds of campers.
Many pottery sherds and stone tools have been found east of the beach, on Kavos Hill, dating back to the prehistoric times. Moreover, two ancient Roman cottages and oil pressing systems have been found. Gavdos was once a place of exile. Indeed, near the beach you can still see the building where the exiled founder of the Greek People's Liberation Army (ELAS - 1942), Aris Velouchiotis, lived. The building can be recognized by the flags of Greece and the European and the sign commemorating the exiled communists.
